DOPPLER WEATHER RADAR ,JAIPUR
State of the art c-band Polarimetric Doppler Weather Radar procured from M/s Vaisala of Finland has been installed at Meteorological Center, Jaipur. After a successful grand inauguration  by   Hon ble AVM Dr. Ajit Tyagi, Ex DGM  on 28th, January 2012 in gracious presence  of Dr. O. P. Singh DDGM, RMC, New Delhi , the RADAR has been made operational round the clock. The system is capable of weather surveillance up to 250km (maximum up to 300 km ) around Jaipur. It provides imageries derived from volume scan depicting location and intensities of clouds, expected rainfall from these clouds, horizontal winds, wind shear etc. The imageries are a very good tool for weather analysis and now casting. The Radar products are automatically updated to IMD s website at 10 minutes interval.

A forecaster / Meteorologist can deduce following information from the useful products generated by the RADAR while scanning the atmosphere round the clock.

1.         General weather like wind velocity, movement of clouds etc.
2.         Presence of clouds and their location.
3.         Height of base and top of clouds.
4.         Instantaneous location of all precipitation over 250Kms around.
5.         Direction and speed of movement of precipitation areas.
6.         Information regarding the intensity of precipitation.
7.         Approximate height of freezing level.
8.         Wind shear when precipitation is falling.
9.         Now-casting of weather regarding occurrence of thunder storms ,dust storms
and hail storms and squalls within next 1 - 3 hours in small scale areas.

It is evident that with the advent Doppler Weather Radar, which  is a good observational tool for weather men to study and analyse the present weather, accuracy of Weather Forecast issued by IMD will certainly improve a lot. The data generated by the Doppler weather radar will be useful for improving the accuracy of various forecasts (like rainfall forecast, cyclone movement etc.) of Numerical Weather Prediction Models being run by IMD.

The DWR generated weather products will also be useful for aviation industry i.e. for operation of airfields, aerodrome warnings, trend forecast and for issuing route (weather) forecast for flights.
